What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a fairly common skin condition, even though it is not yet fully understood. It usually appears in fair-skinned people of middle age and is typically more common in women and more severe in men. The condition appears as a red rash on the face, and especially the chin, forehead, cheeks and nose. The rash appears as flushing, redness, red bumps and sometimes pus-filled spots or inflamed eyes and eyelids.

The Causes

Although some suggest that it is the result of bacteria on the skin or in the gut, the causes are unknown. Certain factors are known to trigger the condition and cause the skin’s blood vessels to enlarge. These factors include the use of alcohol, extremes of temperature, spicy food, exercise and stress. Photodamage by UV light via exposure to natural sunlight can also worsen the condition. This can cause degradation of vitamins A and C affecting collagen support around the blood vessels. Rosacea is not contagious.

Typical Rosacea Treatments

In some instances, antibiotics are used to good effect because they reduce the swelling. Some creams are also known to be effective. Preparations that include metronidazole and azelaic acid can help to lessen the appearance of the condition. It would typically take around eight weeks for this to take effect.

Our Preferred Treatments

Vitamin A

First of all, we need to address the chronic lack of vitamin A in the skin that has been a major factor in the problem. It is easier to treat the skin with a retinyl palmitate product (vitamin A). It may take several weeks before it starts to improve. The lowest dose of retinyl palmitate (Environ Skin Care: AVST 1) is used, to begin with until the skin ceases to feel sensitive. Doses of vitamin A are gradually increased. When used with Environ Skin Care: Alpha Cream Mild or Alpha Gel the skin can gradually become softer and more radiant.

Peel Treatments

For more difficult cases of rosacea, we might consider using a peel treatment. After a few treatments using Environ’s LACM #1 and #2 low concentration creams the effects are likely to be visible. The redness will be reduced and the client’s skin will be more comfortable.

Vitamin C

When the skin has improved,  topical vitamin C via Environ Skin Care C-Boost can help to restore the collagen support around the blood vessels.

Rapid Improvements in Rosacea

Many people who have battled with the condition long-term have shown major benefits as a result of a skincare regime. This, together with careful self-management of the triggers that cause rosacea can deliver massive changes in quality of life.

I have suffered for years with Rosacea, tried all the medical gels, creams etc and have been on permanent antibiotics for the last few years to try and keep it under control! The lovely Paula introduced me to Environ. It’s very early days but I have to say my skin has never felt better, and the redness has already lessened, I have even dared to come off the antibiotics. I have had 2 facials so far which are wonderful along with my home daily skin routine using Products recommended by Paula and so far so good. I am looking forward to see what the next few weeks brings.
